Voltaren Gel 2%
Voltaren Gel 2% is one of 2 strengths in which Voltaren Gel (Diclofenac) is supplied. The full range is 1%, 2%. This page covers what the 2% strength is used for and how it fits into typical dosing.
Forms and dosages
Voltaren Gel is supplied in tubes of 50 g, 100 g and 150 g, with a dosing card printed with 2 g and 4 g measuring lines. For the hands, wrists and elbows, apply 2 g four times a day, up to 8 g daily per joint; for the knees, ankles and feet, apply 4 g four times a day, up to 16 g daily per joint. Total use should not exceed 32 g per day across all treated joints. Rub the gel gently into clean, intact skin and wash your hands afterwards unless the hands themselves are being treated. The Emulgel 2% strength is applied twice daily. Do not cover the area with bandages or heat pads.
Indications
Voltaren Gel is indicated for the relief of osteoarthritis pain in joints that lie close to the skin surface, chiefly the knees, hands, wrists, elbows, ankles and feet. Outside the US, Voltaren Emulgel is also licensed for acute soft-tissue injuries such as sprains, strains and bruising, and for localised soft-tissue rheumatism including tendinitis and bursitis. The gel has not been shown to work for the spine, hips or shoulders, where the joint lies too deep beneath the skin. According to the OTC label, use should not exceed 21 days unless a doctor advises otherwise, and pain that persists or worsens should be reviewed by a physician.
